Common CPAP Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Using a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine can significantly improve sleep apnea symptoms, but improper use can lead to discomfort and reduced effectiveness. Here are some common CPAP mistakes and how to fix them.

1. Using the Wrong Mask Size

One of the biggest issues CPAP users face is an ill-fitting mask, which can cause air leaks, discomfort, and disrupted sleep.

Fix: Try different mask styles (nasal, full-face, or nasal pillows) and adjust the straps for a snug yet comfortable fit. Drop by either of our Lakeside Medical stores in Vernon or Salmon Arm and speak to our knowledgeable staff and they will be able to help you find the best product for your needs.

2. Not Cleaning the CPAP Regularly

Dust, bacteria, and mold can accumulate in the tubing and mask, which may lead to respiratory issues.

Fix: Clean your mask, tubing, and the water chamber daily with mild soap and water, and replace filters as recommended.

3. Setting the Wrong Pressure

Too high or too low pressure can make breathing difficult and reduce CPAP effectiveness.

Fix: Work with your healthcare provider to adjust settings. Some machines have auto-adjusting features for better comfort. Again, come by the store, or call us to discuss any questions you might have and we are happy to help.

4. Skipping the Humidifier

Dry air from the CPAP can cause nasal congestion and throat irritation.

Fix: Use a heated humidifier or add a heated hose to maintain moisture levels.

5. Taking Off the Mask During Sleep

New users often remove the mask unconsciously due to discomfort.

Fix: Wear the mask while awake to get used to it, and consider using a chin strap if mouth breathing is an issue.
