Edible Tree Decorations

Edible decorations make the holiday fun, and most of them can be made in your home kitchen. Tinsel is easy to make by threading popcorn and cranberries alternately into long strands then wrapping them around your tree. Dust pressed cookies with edible sprinkles, taking care to punch a hole in the top of them before they cool so you have a hole to pull ribbon through. Candy canes are inexpensive additions to your Christmas décor, adding a splash of bright colour to green branches.

Candied popcorn stars are pretty, but you may decide to eat them before they make it to the tree! Here’s the recipe:

Combine sugar and next 3 ingredients in a heavy sauce pan. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring often, until butter melts and sugar dissolves. Increase heat to medium; bring to a boil. Cook, without stirring, until candy thermometer registers 123 C.

Remove from heat and stir in the salt and vanilla. Quickly pour the mixture over the popcorn then toss the mixture gently to coat. Add nonpareils, tossing gently to combine.

Moisten or grease your hands, then working quickly, press the mixture into a star shaped cookie cutter. If the candied corn becomes too hard to shape, simply place the mixture in a warm oven for a few minutes to soften up.
