High blood pressure, or hypertension, can result from multiple factors, including environmental influences such as lack of exercise or stress, blood plasma volume or hormone activity. Risk factors can be age, ethnicity, obesity, alcohol and tobacco use and existing poor health conditions. Secondary hypertension is a complication of other health problems and may be caused by diabetes, or chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD causes high blood pressure because when the function of the kidneys to filter fluid out becomes compromised, excess fluid leads to hypertension. These are just some of the causes of primary and secondary hypertension, but let’s focus on the positive – there are many things people can do to manage or prevent hypertension.
- Reduce salt intake.
- Moderate alcohol consumption, and don’t smoke. Food-guide Canada recommends limiting alcohol intake for health. Some experts suggest these maximum drink guidelines: One drink a day as defined by 12 oz bottle of beer, 5 ounces of wine and 1.5 ounces of 80 proof distilled spirits. Replace alcohol with plenty of clean filtered water through the week, and you can’t go wrong.
- Eat green leafy vegetables, fruit, pulses, nuts, fish rich in omega-3 and low fat dairy. When at risk of developing hypertension, eat less saturated fat.
- As always, regular exercise is part of a healthy lifestyle to combat high blood pressure and boosts positive mental health.
- Check your blood pressure regularly. We sell blood pressure monitors for home use, and you can easily buy one online.
